Roadrunners join San Antonio’s march for justice in honor of César Chávez

Roadrunners join San Antonio’s march for justice in honor of César Chávez

(March 22, 2018) -- The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) community will express its desire to be civically engaged this weekend. Many Roadrunners will participate in the 22nd Annual César E. Chávez March for Justice in honor of the esteemed civil rights leader and as a way to join the more than 1,400 volunteers taking part in UTSA’s Day of Service.

The march is scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 24. It begins at Guadalupe and South Brazos streets and ends at César E. Chávez Blvd. and Indiana Street, across from Hemisfair Park.

Chávez was a labor leader and civil rights activist who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association and later the United Farm Workers (UFW) union. He grew up as Mexican American farm worker, who later fought for worker’s rights, and has become the best-known Mexican American civil rights activist. His community-based, aggressive but nonviolent tactics gained the farm workers' struggle nationwide support. By the late 1970s, UFW helped improve rights for 50,000 field workers in California and Florida.

“It is important to honor the important work that César Chávez and Dolores Huerta engaged in for farm workers in the US,” said Marco Cervantes, who is chairing the march’s planning committee and oversees UTSA’s Mexican American Studies program. “The march serves as a time to reflect on the courage and sacrifices made by the United Farm Workers and offers a way to respect their activism.”

For the second year in a row, UTSA participation in the march is supported by a collaborative group working under the unofficial title of #UTSAmarches. This UTSA team includes representatives from the Office of the President, Student Government, the Mexican American Studies and African American Studies Programs, the Student Leadership Center, Student Center for Community Engagement and Inclusion, Veteran and Military Affairs and the Center for Civic Engagement.

“UTSA participates in the César E. Chávez march each year because we recognize that scholarship and student development are best served when the institution is actively engaged in San Antonio,” said Eliot Howard, associate director of the Student Leadership Center. “Roadrunners marching in this event help to underscore UTSA’s commitment to the strategic theme of serving an urban serving university. The issues that Chávez championed in his lifetime represent ongoing work, and by familiarizing our students with his legacy, we are helping prepare them to carry in his footsteps in support for social and economic justice.”

UTSA will provide free shuttles to transport faculty, staff and students.  Main Campus participants will meet at the Convocation Center at 7:30 a.m. to ride the shuttle to the Downtown campus in time for the Day of Service kick-off breakfast. Marchers may also meet the shuttle leaving from the Downtown Campus at 9:15 a.m. in the Durango Lot. Participants can also meet the UTSA group at the start of the march.

Roadrunner Nation is encouraged to wear blue to the march and will walk behind the university banner, chanting along the route. There will be a presentation on the significance of Chávez' life following the rally at the conclusion of the march.
