SURF bridges military and academic biomedical research with clinical best practices

SURF bridges military and academic biomedical research with clinical best practices

(June 25, 2018) -- More than 400 researchers, clinicians, residents and graduate students will gather at UTSA this week for the annual San Antonio Military Health System and Universities Research Forum (SURF). The event, which is free and open to the public, is Thursday, June 28 and Friday, June 29 in the H-E-B Student Union Ballroom (HSU 1.104) on the UTSA Main Campus.

For the past four years, the leadership of UTSA, UT Health San Antonio and the San Antonio Military Health System have organized keynote presentations, roundtable discussions, symposia and a poster session to showcase the research and clinical excellence in San Antonio, where the Department of Defense has its largest hospital and only Level 1 trauma center in the country.

“This is a unique conference that UTSA and our partners organize for the research community of South Texas. It not only benefits the military community, but all participants ― from students to seasoned investigators ― who are adding to the body of knowledge in both basic and applied research,” said Bernard Arulanandam, interim vice president for research, economic development and knowledge enterprise at UTSA.

“With the significant aggregation of military installations and organizations providing medical education, training and research, coupled with the large veteran population, our city is well-poised to create research partnerships that leverage our strengths in biomedicine, military health and innovation,” said Andrea Giuffrida, vice president for research at UT Health San Antonio. “SURF is just another excellent example of the shared value to collaborate held by the research partners in Military City, USA.”

Funding for this conference was made possible in part by grant (1R13TR002409-01) from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences and the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute.

There is no fee to attend the forum, which includes continental breakfast, lunch and parking, but pre-registration is highly encouraged for planning purposes. Health care professionals may earn continuing education credits and units by attending the forum.
