(July 23, 2018) – Fun is in the air this week as a variety of summer camps kick off on the UTSA Main Campus. Throughout the summer, UTSA offers more than 60 camps in science, engineering, architecture, sports, music, writing, language, culture and more.
Campers will explore modern science and technology, discover the Chinese culture and show off their skills on the Roadrunner fields.
UTSA offers these camps for the week of July 23-27:
Archaeology and the Science of Skeletons
Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Center for Archeological Research, Main Campus
In this sold out session, campers ages 9-13 will discover the field of bioarchaeology while being introduced to cultural traditions all over the world. They will learn how archaeologists use skeletal remains to uncover the past. Campers can expect archaeology themed activities, games, crafts and a hands-on look at artifacts in a lab.
iTEC Camps
Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., various locations, Main Campus
Campers will explore science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on activities. This week, campers in kindergarten through 2nd grade will explore the color of science and programming. Third grade through 5th grade will take part in engineering week and learn about Sir Lance-a-Bot. Sixth grade through 8th grade will have a chance to experience digital technology and fused robotic from Sphero company.
New this year, UTSA is also offering Texas Workforce Commission Governor’s Summer Merit Program, a free iTEC program for qualified students ages 14-21. The camp gives students an understanding and appreciation of specific aspects of the science, technology and career opportunities in advanced technologies and manufacturing, particularity robotics.
Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., UTSA Practice Field, Main Campus
This camp will provide a great opportunity for athletes from 9th grade through college to learn from the top UTSA football coach and staff. Campers will receive instruction and coaching on agility testing as well as position specific drills, allowing participants to refine and improve their skillset as a football player. They will put those skills to use at the end of the camp during practice games.
Baseball Camp
Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Roadrunner Field, Main Campus
Campers will cover throwing, hitting, fielding, fly balls, base running and bunting in this youth camp designed for players ages 5-14. Campers will compete in games daily and in the Roadrunner Olympics on the final day of camp.
Softball Camp
Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Roadrunner Field, Main Campus
Campers from age 5 through 6th grade will get instruction on infield, outfield and hitting techniques. Campers will experience some of the everyday drills that UTSA softball players do. The camp will also contain drill and competition stations.
Chinese Language and Culture Camp
Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Main Campus
Campers will enjoy the summer learning to read, write and speak the Chinese language. They also will learn about the Chinese culture such as martial arts, painting and drawing, arts and crafts and more. This camp is intended for children ages 6-12.
