(Aug. 17, 2018) -- UTSA is making another investment in the future of San Antonio. The UTSA College of Business, in partnership with UT Health San Antonio, is launching two new executive leadership programs: the Executive MBA (EMBA) for Health Professionals and the Executive Development Program (EDP) for Emerging Health Leaders.
Under the co-direction of Jonathan Clark, Ph.D. from the UTSA College of Business and Ramon Cestero, M.D. from UT Health San Antonio, as well as significant contributions from Kathryn Keeton, Ph.D. and Bruce Rudy, Ph.D. in the UTSA Center for Professional Excellence, these new executive programs have been developed to strengthen San Antonio’s health care community by providing customized classroom to career learning opportunities for health care professionals.
The 21-month EMBA program, which begins this fall, will draw students from different health care areas such as pediatrics, neurology, anesthesiology, family medicine, surgery, pathology, radiation oncology, nursing, and obstetrics and gynecology. Students will receive instruction in advanced business principles and leadership skills. They will also complete group research projects designed to fine-tune their business knowledge, tools and acumen.
Program topics will include data analytics and cyber security, accounting for health care organizations, legal, ethical and social issues in health care management, social media marketing, health care economics and policy, and organizational and managerial issues in health care.
Participants of the EMBA will also have the opportunity to participate in an international field experience to gain exposure to the growing role of globalization and health care. The eight to 10-day international seminar is sponsored by UT Health San Antonio’s Long School of Medicine.
Starting this fall, the UTSA College of Business will also launch its Executive Development Program (EDP) for Emerging Health Leaders at the UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine. Participants are junior to mid-level faculty who are serving in leadership positions such as clinic directors, medical directors, program directors and division chiefs.
Cohort participants will complete a thorough series of 360-degree and personal leadership assessments to identify their strengths, positive leader behaviors and practices before moving to leadership development instruction and intensive group sessions that meet monthly.
Program topics will include leadership and organizational culture, leadership complexity and agility, leadership dynamics, developing an executive presence, leading change/change management, developing a high performing team and cultivating the emerging leaders on a team. The program will conclude with a customized executive-level project experience.
“We are thrilled to work with UT Health San Antonio on these programs,” said Wm. Gerard Sanders, dean and Bodenstedt Chair in the UTSA College of Business. “The EMBA and EDP programs are tangible examples of how the College of Business partners with key organizations in San Antonio to help develop their future leaders. With these programs we provided a customized learning experience for UT Health San Antonio health care professionals.”
Robert Hromas, M.D., FACP, dean of the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, added, “The Executive MBA for Health Professionals will benefit senior-level faculty at UT Health San Antonio, and the Executive Development Program for Emerging Health Leaders will benefit junior and mid-level faculty. These programs are needed because providers are faced with not only challenging health care issues, but the increasingly complex business around health care.”
