(April 24, 2019) -- Professor Roger Enriquez, director of the UTSA Policy Studies Center and associate professor of criminal justice will present a timely talk, open to the public, on April 30 titled A Nation of Immigrants: The Past, Present and Future of Immigration Law.
In order to celebrate 50 years as San Antonio’s urban serving university and to thank San Antonio for its support and commitment to higher education, UTSA is presenting its 50th Anniversary Scholars Speaker Series throughout 2019, featuring experts on a broad range of contemporary issues that impact society.
Enriquez will introduce immigration policies that have welcomed people from all types of backgrounds and discuss how immigration to the United States in the past and present will help us understand its future.

Enriquez’s areas of expertise include criminal law, immigration policy, police and community relations, and the culture of lawfulness. His work has been recognized by the National Institute of Justice, Health Resources Services Administration and Texas Access to Justice Foundation through grants and contract awards. Enriquez has been published on a wide variety of topics within the field of criminal justice, such as the impact of immigration enforcement on mixed-citizenship families, restorative justice, and Latino jurors, among others.
“We could learn a lot about our future by looking at the past and perhaps the most important takeaway is that 300 years of experience demonstrates that immigration is good public policy,” said Enriquez. “Immigration restrictions seem to emerge during periods when some of the following factors are present: anti-immigration rhetoric is high; there are surges in immigrant populations; perceived threats to cultural norms and public safety are high; and the economy is bad.”
After graduating from UTSA with his bachelor’s of business administration in 1998, Enriquez earned his Juris Doctor of Law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law.
A Nation of Immigrants: The Past and Future of Immigration Law, is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30 at the Casa Hernán, 411 E Cevallos St, San Antonio, TX 78204. Doors will open and a cash bar will be available at 6 p.m. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet the speaker following the presentation at 7:15 p.m. This lecture is free and open to the public.
