Roadrunners start college journey during move-in weekend

Roadrunners start college journey during move-in weekend

More than 4,300 Roadrunners live on campus.

(Aug. 23, 2019) -- Thousands of Roadrunners arrive on campus today to begin a new chapter in their lives during UTSA Residence Hall Move-In weekend. On Friday, Aug. 23 and Saturday, Aug. 24, more than 2,300 students will be moving into Laurel Village, Chaparral Village and Alvarez Hall, adding to the total of 4,300 Roadrunners who live on campus. A majority of the students will be freshmen, experiencing their first time living away from family as they transition to college life.

Roadrunners living in residence halls will have a new perk this year to prepare them for academic success. Ten Residential Peer Coaches, who are also returning Resident Assistants, will serve as live-in, trained, peer academic coaches, providing accessible coaching services to students in Laurel Village, Chaparral Village and Alvarez Hall.

Residential Peer Coaching Program is one of many ways UTSA is enhancing the needs of undergraduate students living on campus through informal advising on life goals, academic progress, time management and life skills development. The program is a collaboration between Residence Life, the Tomás Rivera Center Academic Success Coaching program, and Counseling Services, and is supported by the Division of Student Success.

To make the move-in experience as smooth as possible, UTSA Housing is asking all students and families to enter campus at Brackenridge Ave Lot 5, off UTSA Blvd. and Babcock in the southwest corner of campus. From there, they will be given temporary unloading permits and further directions to where they need to go. At the unloading lots near the residence halls, volunteers from the UTSA community will be waiting to help students move all their possessions into their new homes.

To celebrate move-in, UTSA is offering Rowdy’s Stop and Go. Tents will be set up near the residence halls on Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide families with food and drinks to get through the hot San Antonio day. There also will be university staff on hand to answer questions about move-in, the beginning of the semester or even where to eat on campus. Families will also have the opportunity to register for free membership in the UTSA Family Association.

Residence Hall Move-In is just the beginning of Roadrunner Days, a series of fun and informative events designed to welcome both new and returning students to UTSA. The annual tradition has been expanded to 16 days, running through Sept. 7. Dozens of engaging and informative activities offer something for everybody, and provide students multiple opportunities to make connections with other students, faculty and staff.

Once students are unpacked Friday evening, they’re encouraged to head over to the Student Union Paseo for the debut performance of this year’s Spirit of San Antonio marching band. The music gets started at 7:30 p.m.

Roadrunner Days fun will continue on Saturday, Aug. 24. At 9 p.m. the Recreation and Wellness Center will host Late Night at the Rec. At this popular annual event, students can have fun dancing, playing basketball and dodgeball, rock climbing and more, while learning about Campus Rec facilities, programs and club sports.

Students should download and use Event Pass on their mobile device to check into Roadrunner Days events and get the freebies being handed out. To set up Event Pass, students may log into RowdyLink, click on “Profile” and download the app using Apple Wallet or Google Play.
