Downtown Campus Council Answers Concerns

Downtown Campus CouncilFrom academic affairs and food services to safety matters and parking, all topics have a place on the agenda for the monthly meeting of the Downtown Campus Council. Vice Provost Jesse Zapata first convened the group back in December 1997, shortly after the opening of the Downtown Campus.

"The council is really an outgrowth of the many meetings held between representatives from virtually every university unit prior to the opening," said Zapata. "We had to coordinate every aspect before moving in. Soon after, we needed to start our detailed planning for the Buena Vista Street Building. And then, there were just the routine administrative details and events that needed to be discussed.

"And, as almost every Downtown Campus Council member has a reporting responsibility to the 1604 Campus, the council meetings are also a good way of ensuring that issues and concerns are given the necessary attention from the entire UTSA community."

Council members include Associate Deans Art Hernandez (Education and Human Development), Jim Calder (Urban and Professional Programs), Richard Lewis (Liberal and Fine Arts) and Martha Fasci (Business, Sciences and Engineering); Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies and Enrollment Management Rosalie Ambrosino; Associate Vice President for Business Affairs Ysabel Trinidad; Assistant Director for Student Leadership and Cultural Programs Michelle Montanio; Downtown Library Head John Barnett; and Gina Mendez from the Vice Provost's office.

But the group often has special guests--College of Business Dean Bruce Bublitz, Parking and Transportation Manager Bill Hamilton and most recently, student Julie Trevino, who spoke about plans for NIUTSA, an upcoming Fiesta-related event planned at the Downtown Campus. All are welcome.

"The council meetings really give me an opportunity to compile a sort of 'activities and concerns report,' which I can then take back to 1604. At the same time, I enjoy getting to have personal contact with the group," added Zapata, who greets members and guests with a tray of freshly baked pan at each gathering.

To be included on the agenda for any meeting, contact the Vice Provost's office or any council member. You may attend the meeting in person or request that your issue, question or comment be presented to the group.

The Downtown Campus Council's regular meeting time is 9 a.m. every third Thursday of the month in the Vice Provost's Conference Room, located in Frio Street Building Room 4.452. For more information, call 458-2700.
