Student Health Services Issues Health Advisory Notice

Student Health Services is requesting that any students or other members of the Tri-Campus community who were in Acapulco during March and who may have stayed at or visited the Calinda Beach Hotel come to Student Health Services as soon as possible.

According to UTSA Student Health Services Assistant Director Pat Berlet, all who come in will be evaluated at no charge for the presence of a respiratory illness that has been seen in many travelers returning to the U.S. from that period of time, particularly students returning from spring break. Individuals suspected of having the illness will be referred for free testing by the Metropolitan Health District. Appropriate treatment will be arranged for those who test positive for the illness.

Berlet added the illness most likely is histoplasmosis, which can be contracted directly from the environment when large quantities of birds are present. The condition cannot be spread from person to person.

While the exact source of the exposure has not been definitively pinpointed, preliminary investigations by the Mexican Ministry of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control indicate that all those who have contracted the disease had stayed at the Calinda Beach Hotel or had visited hotel guests.

Symptoms include fever, headache, dry cough and pain in the middle of breastbone.

At 1604, Student Health Services is located in Science Building Room 103.02. The Downtown Campus location is Buena Vista Street Building Room 1.308.
