Three UTSA Faculty Members Receive La Raza Awards

Bertha PerezBefore an audience of nearly 100 colleagues, family, friends and community leaders, including Congressman and Mrs. Ciro Rodriguez, three members of the UTSA community were recognized with La Raza Faculty and Administrators Lifetime Achievement Awards in ceremonies held at the Downtown Campus.

Vice President for Extended Services Jude Valdez, Professor of Education Bertha Perez and Professor of Foreign Languages Frank Pino received the honor, given to individuals who have Frank Pinomade significant contributions to society and whose accomplishments have brought significant credit to the Mexican American Community in South Texas.

Each honoree was presented a colorful, one-of-a-kind sculpture created by artist Dolores Zapata Murff. Every sculpture included a figurine-likeness of the recipient.

Other awardees for 2001 were San Antonio Jude ValdezExpress-News columnist Carlos Guerra, writer Barbara Renaud Gonzalez and labor organizer John Stanford.

Also during the event, UTSA senior Katherine Cantu was presented a scholarship by La Raza.
