Southland Conference Tennis Tournament Begins
Friday at UTSA

Men's tennis playerWith an automatic berth to the NCAA regional tennis tournament on the line, six men's and women's teams will compete in the Southland Conference Tennis Championships at the UTSA Tennis Complex beginning Friday.

On the men's side, UTSA is the top-seed after a 6-0 regular season record.

The Roadrunners feature two-time SLC Players of the Week Andy Murillo and Frederik Darmont. Murillo, a senior from San Antonio, is the No. 1 singles player for UTSA, compiling a 9-3 record this spring. Murillo and Darmont comprise UTSA's top doubles team. They have an impressive 9-3 record at the No. 1 doubles position.

The men will begin play at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21 against the winner of the Texas-Pan American/La. Monroe match.

The women's team is seeded No. 2 and boast a 9-1 conference record, with their only loss coming versus Texas-Arlington. Both Texas-Arlington and UTSA are ranked among the Top 75 teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). UTA is ranked 68th with UTSA next at 69.

The women will play at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 21 against the winner of the La. Monroe/S.F. Austin match.

In conjunction with the tournament, a Youth Education in Sports Clinic will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. Saturday, April 21 at the Convocation Center. Girls ages 10 to 18 are invited to attend the clinic with instruction from college coaches and student-athletes. Life-skills, conditioning and skill instruction will be discussed during the clinic. The clinic is free and each participant will receive a family pass good for admission to the tournament finals on Sunday.

The men's championships will be played at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 22 followed by the women's championship at 1 p.m.

Admission is $10 for an adult tournament pass and $5 for a student (12 and under) tournament pass. Single-day passes are $5 for adults, $3 for students and college students with ID are admitted free.
