Two UTSA Employees Serve on UT System Employee Advisory Council
(Aug. 6, 2001) Employee compensation, health insurance, telecommuting and staff communications on the Internet are among the issues on which the newly formed Employee Advisory Council (EAC) of the University of Texas System will focus during its first full year of operation.
The Council formed four standing committees that will research those issues and present recommendations to UT System Chancellor R.D. Burck and members at the February 2002 Board of Regents meeting.
The Council elected as its Chair Lorraine Etkin, employee health department administrator at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Other officers are Vice Chair Walter Tenery, electrician leader at UT Arlington; Secretary Lee Arisano, administrative services officer II at UT El Paso; and Historian Sherill Boline, administrative associate at UT System Administration.
The standing committees and their Chairs are as follows: Benefits Committee, Terri Reynolds, administrative services officer II at UT San Antonio; Policy Committee, Robert Vasquez, director of financial aid at UT Permian Basin; Compensation Committee, Shirley Zwinggi, administrative manager at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas; and Communication Committee, John Poindexter, assistant director of multimedia imaging at UT San Antonio.
The EAC was formed by the Board of Regents last year to give the UT System's 68,000 staff employees a new voice in discussions with the board and administrators. The committee consists of two representatives and an alternate from each of the 15 institutions and System Administration. Similar committees of students and faculty have existed since the early 1990s.
UTSA established a staff council in 2000, and its current Chair is John Poindexter. Terri Reynolds serves as Vice Chair. Most recently, the UTSA Staff Council successfully worked with President Romo to establish a tuition remission program for UTSA employees.
