Business Students Place Second in National Human Resource Competition
(Aug. 1, 2001) For the second year in a row, a team of University of Texas at San Antonio human resource management students advanced to the national competition of the Society for Human Resource Management HR Games. The UTSA team placed second in the nation, improving on last year's third-place finish.
The competition, formatted like the television game show "Jeopardy," showcases human resource knowledge. Students answer questions similar to those found on the Professional Human Resource (PHR) certification exam.
UTSA's team traveled to San Francisco in June to compete after winning the regional competition. They defeated Pennsylvania State University in the first round and Youngstown State University in the second round. They lost in the finals to Cal State Fresno.
Team members included Micky Candia, Rick Cortinas and Jodi Huffacker. Faculty member Steve Werling served as their coach. Each member will receive a $500 scholarship and a PHR exam scholarship. UTSA human resource management majors have ranked first in the nation three out of the past five years for having the most students pass the PHR certification exam. In addition, the student organization is ranked as one of the top five student organizations and received a superior merit award from the National Society for Human Resource Management.
UTSA’s College of Business is accredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. It is one of the 40 largest business schools in the nation with more than 4,400 enrolled students and 34 different graduate and undergraduate business programs.
