Institute of Texan Cultures Announces Admission Fee Increase
(August 16, 2001)--The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC), one of the three campuses of the University of Texas at San Antonio, announced new admission rates effective Sept. 4, 2001. Despite the price increases, the ITC remains an entertainment and education bargain, considering that a family of two parents with two children can gain admittance to the museum for only $14.
General admission for adults increases to $5, and for senior citizens (65+) and military (with ID) it goes up to $3. The new rates reflect an increase of $1 for those categories. Admission for children (ages 3-12) stays at $2. Children under 3 will still be admitted free. There has been no increase in admission to the Institute since 1995, when it first began charging for entry.
Admission for school groups goes up to $20 and includes admission for one teacher and one chaperone for every 10 students in grades 1-12. For pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, one chaperone is required for every 5 students. The rate for additional chaperones is $2 per person.
The new rates are below or in line with what is charged by other museums in San Antonio and across the state, according to Rex Ball, executive director. "The admission rate increases became necessary when funding was not keeping up with expenditures," said Ball. "The decision to raise the admission rate was deliberated at length and with the belief that access to the Institute of Texan Cultures should remain an affordable cultural and historical experience for the citizens of our city, as well as for visitors from throughout Texas and beyond."
The Institute of Texan Cultures is an educational center focused on the history and diverse cultures of Texas. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., the ITC is located at Bowie Street and Durango Boulevard in HemisFair Park in downtown San Antonio. The Institute is closed Mondays, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Student and tour groups should contact the Institute to reserve tour times and for specific admission information. Contact the ITC by calling (210) 458-2300 or visit their Web site.
