Paralegal Certificate Program Offered at UTSA
(Aug. 2, 2001) The University of Texas at San Antonio will offer a paralegal
training program, beginning Sept. 15.
Applications are now being accepted for the 11-month program which will train
participants to assist attorneys. Paralegals, or legal assistants, perform
many duties under attorney supervision, including document drafting, legal
research, fact investigation, case management and trial preparation.
The program comprises three, 12-week units: Foundational Skills; Law, Legal
Drafting and Computers; and Legal Specialties. Upon successful completion
of the program, participants receive the UTSA Paralegal Certificate, recognized
by employers. Additionally, graduates of the program who also have at least
45 semester hours of college credit in any other field are also eligible to
take the Certified Legal Assistant Exam.
The UTSA classes, which will meet 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays at the 1604
Campus, will be taught by local attorneys. Lecturers will also be available
online via distance learning.
The total cost is $3,600, or $1,200 per unit, plus textbooks. Career training
loans are available to qualified applicants, and the program will also sponsor
a free Legal Career Day from 10:30 a.m.-noon Aug. 25 at the 1604 Campus in
Business Building Room 3.02.30.
Registration deadline for the program is Sept. 7, and space is limited. For more information or an application, call the UTSA College of Urban and Professional Programs (which becomes the College of Public Policy on Sept. 1) at (210) 458-2700 or 1-800-442-1331.
