Spikers Report for Camp

(Aug. 13, 2001)--New faces joined old Friday morning as the UTSA volleyball squad's nine returnees and two newcomers reported for physicals and meetings. "I'm ready to get out of the office and onto the gym floor," said UTSA assistant coach Rhonda Rust. "We're excited about this team and this season."

Stacy Schmidt and Charlsie Heifrin head the list of veterans from last year's 24-9 NCAA tournament squad looking to repeat as Southland (SLC) Conference tournament champions. The Roadrunners finished second during the regular-season in 2000, but enjoyed a 15-0 late-season run that pushed them past the rest of the league and into an NCAA tournament firstround game.

Schmidt led the 2000 squad in both kills and digs on the way to earning a first team spot on the all-SLC squad. Heifrin was the SLC Freshman of the Year and the Roadrunner's blocking leader. Shelly Wilson and Chymeka Johnson are the team's only two newcomers. The squad begins two-a-days Monday in preparation for their Aug. 31 opener at Northern Illinois.
