Lynn Hickey to Receive Inaugural Award from AAUW The award will be given annually to an individual who has achieved a breakthrough for women in employment. "We want to recognize and celebrate Lynn's many firsts," said Orrine L. Woinowsk, president of the AAUW San Antonio Branch. "She was the first woman athletic director of a public university in Texas, the first woman athletic director for the University of Texas at San Antonio and the first woman athletic director in the Southland Conference." Hickey said she was "extremely honored" to receive this accolade. "To be thought of so highly by as prestigious an organization as the American Association of University Women is very gratifying." Since Hickey's arrival at UTSA in August of 1999, she has increased the support staff of the intercollegiate athletic department--adding a compliance director, strength and conditioning coach and a senior women's administrator. Hickey is also a vital cog in college athletics as a member of the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee, the NCAA Basketball Issues Committee and the NCAA 2001 Midwest Regional Committee. In becoming the fourth athletic director in UTSA history, Hickey assumed the lead athletic role in one of the youngest NCAA Division I universities in the country. The Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award will be given to Hickey Feb. 25 during ceremonies at the DoubleTree Hotel, located on McCullough at Loop 410. The event begins with a champagne brunch and silent auction at 11 a.m., with the awards program slated for noon. Cost for the brunch is $25. For more information, call Marilyn Traylor at 696-8299.
