ITC Hosts Asian New Year Festival Saturday

Asian New Year FestivalMembers of the Tri-Campus community are invited to celebrate The Year of the Snake, during the 14th annual Asian New Year Festival from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. this Saturday at the Institute of Texan Cultures.

The festival is filled with the sounds, sights and tastes of many Eastern cultures represented in San Antonio, including Chinese, Filipino, Hawaiian/Polynesian, Indian/Asian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Lao, Malaysian, Pakistani, Singaporean, Taiwanese, Thai and Vietnamese.

Children and adults can take part in many hands-on activities such as Chinese calligraphy, brush painting, paper cutting and mahjong; Indian sari-wrapping, bindi, rangoli, name writing, garland making and palm reading; Japanese calligraphy, origami and Ikebana arranging; Hawaiian/Polynesian hula dancing, tapa cloth painting and lei making; and Vietnamese fortune telling.

UTSA students, faculty and staff are admitted free of charge with a current University ID. General admission is $4 for adults, 13-64; $2 for children, 3-12 and seniors, 65-over; and free for children, under the age of two. Free admission will also be given to ITC members and visitors wearing traditional Asian costumes.

The Asian New Year Festival was created to promote the understanding and appreciation of the arts of the Asian countries and to provide the local community an opportunity to appreciate the attitudes, values and cultures of the Asian people in San Antonio and South Texas.
