Women's Basketball Team Off to Best Conference Start

Women's basketball player dribbles through the defense. The women's basketball team, off to their best conference start since joining the Southland Conference, will host Lamar Thursday, Jan. 11 at the Convocation Center. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

UTSA, 4-1 in conference play, has won three games in a row.

UTSA defeated Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State last weekend. The Roadrunners used a stifling defense in the first half of each game to build leads they did not relinquish.

UTSA shot a season-best 42 percent (21 of 50) against Southeastern Louisiana. They also held the Lady Lions to just 41 points, the fewest given up since a 67-40 win at Sam Houston State on Feb. 2, 1998.

Junior forward/guard Julie Rampley led UTSA in scoring and rebounding with 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last weekend. Senior center Sarah Brock made her first appearance of the year against Southeastern Louisiana. She matched her career-high with 14 points against Nicholls State.

UTSA trails the series versus Lamar, 8-3. However, UTSA has won two of the past three meetings, including a 51-49 decision at the Convocation Center on Jan. 15, 2000. Lamar's strengths include the top scorer in the league and strong defensive play.

Tickets are $8 reserved, $6 adults, $4 children and UTSA students free. Call 458-4646 for ticket information.
