Romo Welcomes New UTHSC President

President Ricardo Romo and UTHSC President Francisco CigarroaUTSA President Ricardo Romo hosted a reception for UTHSC President Francisco Cigarroa Tuesday in the Biosciences Building.

Cigarroa, a nationally renowned pediatric and transplant surgeon, joined the Health Science Center in 1995 and served as director of pediatric surgery and director of abdominal organ transplantation.

"As president of the Health Science Center, President Cigarroa is committed to partnering with our institution on projects of mutual interest," said Romo.

Last week the UT System Academic Affairs and Health Affairs committees endorsed a plan to develop 10 postgraduate degree programs to be offered jointly by UTSA and the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. It would be the first academic collaboration between UT System academic and medical components.

Program areas include bioengineering; music psychology; biology with an emphasis in molecular and cellular biology; neurosciences with an emphasis in imaging; computational biology; speech and language pathology; social work; linguistics; physics and teacher education.

"I look forward to additional opportunities to work with President Cigarroa and his talented faculty, staff and students at the Health Science Center," said Romo.
