UTSA Campus Receives a Makeover

Physical Plant crews took advantage of the relatively quiet time on the 1604 Campus between semesters to tackle some $1.2 million in improvements.

Workers are using the largest portion of the money, $823,000, to enhance exterior night lighting, according to UTSA Facilities Services Director George Morales.

"During the first phase of the lighting upgrade project, we are concentrating on the arcades, which are the covered exterior walkways located on each building's main level," he said.

Lighting additions are under way for the Arts, Science and Multidisciplinary Studies buildings as well as the Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSS). The arcades are being brightened with downward-reflecting bulbs placed every 20 feet and with "wall washers" --70-watt bulbs that reflect light onto the buildings' walls.

About 40 wall-washer bulbs will be added to smaller walkways at five-foot intervals, while some 80 to 100 will be installed for the larger arcades, according to Morales.

Similar lighting upgrades are slated later this spring for the Paseo and the Courtyard. Six street lights will also be erected on Margaret Tobin Drive near Chisholm Hall for the enhanced safety of pedestrians and drivers.

Morales also said arcade lighting for the John Peace Library (JPL) Building may be added during the next improvements phase, within the next two years.

Other current upgrades include restoration of older walkways between the JPL, Arts, Science and HSS buildings and the installation of a $10,000, energy-saving automatic door system in the Business Building computer lab.
