Institutional Diversity Office Established at UTSA

Margaret AndersonThe Office of Affirmative Action has a new name--the Office of Institutional Diversity--and a new executive director, Margaret Anderson.

"Our name change comes as the office looks to enhance the scope of services we provide," explained Anderson, who joined UTSA after 13 years with USAA where she served in a number of capacities, ranging from a management program intern to her most recent position as vice president of corporate employee relations.

The office will still provide a venue through which members of the Tri-Campus community may lodge complaints regarding alleged incidents of sexual harassment or discrimination, but Anderson will also strive to promote the positive impact that diversity can bring to higher education.

"While I benefited from my corporate experience, I have missed the higher education environment," said Anderson, "particularly the great mix of learning opportunities and 'open diversity' not usually found in a corporate setting. "A university campus needs to have diversity of thought, ideas and people," she added.

Anderson's own body of professional experiences and interests would seem to embrace that philosophy. Before working with USAA, she spent 10 years at Texas A&M University, where she worked in various human resources positions, including employee relations. While at A&M, she was able to earn a master's degree in education to go along with her bachelor's degree in journalism, completed at UT Austin.

And, with over 20 years experience dealing with people's problems, she still knows how to have fun and take time out for herself. About three years ago, she and her sister joined San Antonio's Urban 15 dancers, who perform at events throughout the city. Anderson delights in her co-workers' surprise at discovering she's the one calling their names, from behind the exotic make-up and costume.

While she concedes her job may not be right for everyone, Anderson said she genuinely enjoys what she does and wants the Office of Institutional Diversity to work in partnership with those it serves.
