National Latino Group Presents Scholarships Texas recepients of scholarship from Latino Initiatives for the Next Century (LINC) and their families attended a dinner at the UTSA Downtown Campus. UT System Chancellor Dan Burck, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Ed Sharpe and Vice Chancellor for Community Relations Armando Diaz came to honor recipients and the acknowledge members of LINC, a Chicago-based partnership that is raising scholarship money for Latino students. UTSA students received 18 of 23 scholarships given to Texas students. LINC co-founders Rudy Mulder of Chicago and David Lizarraga of Los Angeles flew to San Antonio for the occasion. LINC Advisory Board members in Texas recognized at the dinner included UTSA Interim Dean for the College of Education and Human Development Blandina Cardenas; Sam Guzman, president and CEO of the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce; and Austin businessman Andres "Andy" Ramirez. UTSA President Ricardo Romo, host for the evening, spoke to the group about a question asked of him by a San Antonio Express-News reporter. "The reporter wanted to know why so many of the LINC scholarships went to UTSA students," Romo said. "I told him that scholarships generally acknowledge good work that has already been done or the recognized potential for achievement. "Our students at UTSA have already done good things and will achieve more through the completion of their college degrees...a goal made possible through the support of outstanding programs like LINC." After dinner, at the request of Lizarraga, UTSA freshman Priscilla Ramos, as aspiring opera singer, entertained the group with an impromptu aria and received a standing ovation. SCHOLARSHIP
