President Romo Appoints Advisory Committee for the Continued VPSA Search

Citing a need to reexamine the search for a vice president for student affairs, UTSA President Ricardo Romo today announced that a newly selected group of students, faculty and administrators would advise him on what course of action would be best for the university and its students.

"I have asked two vice presidents, Guy Bailey and Jerry Barloco, to select a group of university representatives to make recommendations regarding the recruitment of an outstanding candidate to lead our student affairs staff," Romo said. He asked the committee to submit a report within 30 to 45 days.

As part of their work, the committee will review the files of the recently disbanded VPSA search committee, which was unable to recommend a suitable vice presidential candidate to President Romo. "Many factors led to the group’s inability to make a satisfactory recommendation to the president," said Rosalie Ambrosino, vice provost for undergraduate studies and enrollment services and chair of the original search committee. "It was a difficult decision and I cannot say enough about the hard work and investment of time contributed by committee members."

According to Ambrosino, the original search committee narrowed its list of finalists to two individuals. "Although the finalists had excellent credentials, it was the feeling of the search committee that neither candidate was a perfect match for the university at this time," she said.

Romo’s charge to the new committee is rather broad, he pointed out. "I have asked both Bailey and Barloco to not only examine the recently-concluded search process, but also to consider all options that are suitable for the institution as we work as a team to fill this key administrative post."

"I believe an extension of the search is in the best interest of UTSA's students," said Shane Foley, president of the Student Government Association. "I look forward to working with the administration to find the most suitable candidate."

Pat Graham, assistant vice president for planning and special programs, currently serves as interim vice president for student affairs.

"Our charge from President Romo is to work as expeditiously as possible to draft a recommendation for him," said Guy Bailey, co-chair of the new search committee. "In the immediate future, we will contact prospective members of our new group and look at what course of action we need to take to find the most qualified individual to be UTSA’s next vice president for student affairs."
