UTSA Satellite Space Hosts Realist Painter

The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Satellite Space will exhibit the works of realist painter Rusty Culotta June 8-June 24.

Culotta’s exhibit, "For The Time Being," consists of recent paintings depicting middle-class people recreating by the water. The figurative paintings reflect the discipline of the renderer while avoiding the pitfalls of illustration or mere imitation.

The feature that unites the people in Culotta’s paintings is their sense of disconnectedness from their fellow characters as well as the viewer. That sense of isolation is accentuated by the lack of distinct landscape or horizon line. Culotta’s realism has an almost surrealist quality rendering real people in an unreal scene. Like the paintings of Seurat or Manet, Culotta’s work has a voyeuristic quality as well as a detached ambivalence.

An opening reception is planned from 6-9 p.m Friday, June 15 at the UTSA Satellite Space, 115 Blue Star, Blue Star Art Complex, South Alamo and Probandt streets. Gallery hours are noon-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday or by appointment.

Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call Steve Arredondo at (210) 212-7146.
