Two Faculty Members Receive President's Distinguished Award for Teaching Excellence
Janis
Harmon, assistant professor of education, believes in using a variety of instructional
approaches to teaching including small group sessions and seminar-like formats.
Harmon has also integrated technology into her courses in innovative ways,
including electronic discussions with students taking similar courses in Alabama,
Georgia, and South Carolina. Students read professional articles and discuss
responses on-line.
She is a teacher who makes the needs of her students her first priority in teaching. Some of her students say, "She makes them feel important, like their opinion matters. She makes the class exciting and interesting."
As
a mathematics faculty member for the last ten years , Jerome Keating has shown
a commitment to UTSA students in many different ways. While his primary area
of teaching is statistics, he has also taught in both the College of Sciences
and Engineering and the College of Business. This fall he again taught the
Freshman Seminar as part of UTSAs Learning Communities Program and received
one of the highest ratings of faculty teaching these seminars.
Keating employs a variety of teaching methodologies to motivate his students. He has placed all of his lecture notes and practice exams on a website for easy access for his students. He is a master teacher who has the students interests in the preparation and delivery of his courses.
