Steel drummer performs at UTSA Recital Hall
(Nov. 7, 2001)--The UTSA Department of Music and Steel Drum Band present Gary Gibson in concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Arts Building Recital Hall.
Celebrating his debut CD entitled "My Two Cents," Gibson knew the steel drum was his destiny when he was inspired by a U.S. Navy steel band at a parade. A trained classical musician, Gibson has focused his career on jazz and Caribbean music. Currently, he performs at Seattles Fifth Avenue Theater, leads two steel drum groups, Calypso Blue and Panduo, as well as composes numerous works on commission for ensembles ranging from steel drum band to symphony orchestra.

Air Force ROTC hosts annual memorial run
(Nov. 7, 2001)--The UTSA Air Force ROTC Detachment will hold the Annual POW/MIA 24-Hour Memorial Run Nov. 8-9. The event will begin with a formal flag retirement ceremony at 5 p.m. Nov. 8 at the UTSA flagpole next to the John Peace Library Building. The POW/MIA flag will them be carried to the UTSA Track where a 24-hour run will take place honoring the memory of those soldiers considered to be Prisoners of War and Missing in Action. The event will end at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 at the UTSA track.
The flag retirement ceremony is open to the public and offers an opportunity to witness a piece of military tradition. The Run is also open to those who wish to participate by running while carrying the flag, running for support, or bringing refreshments.

Geography Society co-sponsors lecture on Afghanistan and Tajikistan
(Nov. 7, 2001)--The UTSA Geography Society and the Department of Political Science and Geography are co-sponsoring a lecture by Bill Rowe of UT Austin at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 in Humanities and Social Science Building Room 2.01.24. Rowe will speak on Afghanistan and Tajikistan, where he has conducted research for the past several years.
He will examine aspects of cultural adaptation and change during and after the Soviet era, desert agriculture, and the political geography of the region. His visit is especially timely, given the administration's decision this week to begin mounting military operations from Tajikistan, in addition to Pakistan.

Wellness and recreation department adopts new name
(Nov. 7, 2001)--Wellness and Recreation has a new name. As of October 29, the department is now referred to as Campus Recreation.
"After much discussion with other universities around the country, the name Campus Recreation reflected all that we have to offer the UTSA community, said Suzy Gray, director.
Campus Recreation offers a variety of services to students, faculty and staff including wellness and fitness activities, intramural sports, club sports and group exercise classes. For more information call 458-7575 or go to the Campus Recreation Web site.

"Microcinemania Transformations" art exhibit opens at UTSA Satellite Space
(Nov. 7, 2001)--The UTSA Department of Art is presenting "Microcinemania Transformations," an exhibit of video art, photography and drawings by Rene Gonzalez and Ramon Sandoval Jr. from Nov. 2-25 at the UTSA Satellite Space at the Blue Star Arts Complex.
Rene Gonzalez work features three short videos played simultaneously on three television sets. The video topics range from video games and Japanese pop culture to film satire. Materials used in the work include household fixtures, cardboard and fabrics.
Ramon Sandoval Jr.'s work centers on the concept of transformation. One group of works consists of his photographs of people viewing art at the Hirshorn Museum and National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. His photographs transform art spectators into artwork itself.
Gallery hours are 12-6 p.m. Fri.-Sun. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the UTSA Satellite Space at (210) 212-7146.

UTSA offers tuition grants to would-be bilingual teachers
(Nov. 7, 2001)--The UTSA bicultural-bilingual studies division has grants that will provide tuition, fees and stipends for those who want to become bilingual teachers. These funds are available for the spring 2002 semester.
The grants are designed to assist undergraduates specializing in bilingual education; paraprofessionals and school district employees on a career path to becoming bilingual teachers; and bilingual teachers interested in pursuing a master's degree.
