UTSA public relations student organization receives award

(Nov. 19, 2001)--The UTSA chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) received its second national award in as many years at the PRSSA Annual Conference on October 29 in Atlanta. More than 100 schools and more than 1,000 participants attended the event. Recognized in 2000 for Outstanding Regional Activity, this year UTSA PRSSA was given the Outstanding Community/University Service Award.

For their work, UTSA PRSSA received a plaque and a $300 cash award. UTSA team members for the 2001 Petco AnimalTracks 5K are Molly Gomez, Patrick Green, Mike Klein, Cassandra Miranda, Vangie Quintanilla, Chintan Talati, and Monica Wayman.

Joseph Massey, UTSA assistant professor of communication and PRSSA advisor, said, "I am very proud of our chapter and our UTSA students who worked so hard to support our community and our university."

The UTSA PRSSA chapter earned the award based on their outstanding coordination of the 2nd Annual Petco AnimalTracks 5K, which benefits the Animal Defense League (ADL) in San Antonio. Held on the UTSA 1604 Campus on Apr. 14, the event raised over $5,000 for the ADL and drew nearly 500 runners. More than 100 dogs and other animals also braved the course.

The Dr. F. H. Teahan Awards were established to recognize outstanding achievements by PRSSA chapters. The Outstanding Community/University Service category recognizes voluntary projects executed by a PRSSA chapter that directly benefit the chapter's community or university. UTSA PRSSA's coordination and implementation of the 2nd Annual Petco AnimalTracks 5K benefited both the community and the university by creating local and national publicity for the ADL and UTSA, in addition to the money raised for ADL.

ADL is the Southwest's largest no-kill shelter for homeless, abused or starving animals. Proceeds from the Petco AnimalTracks 5K benefited the "Animals in Crisis" program, which helps injured animals, and provides humane education programs presented at local schools and civic groups.

UTSA’s holiday traditions continue: Holiday Concert and Madrigal Dinner

(Nov. 26, 2001)--The UTSA Department of Music will present its annual holiday performances beginning with the fourth annual Holiday Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 at the Arts Building Recital Hall and the Madrigal Dinner "A Night in the French Court" at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7, 8, 14 and 15 at the Multidisciplinary Studies Building Kiva.

The UTSA Chorus, Women's Choir, Concert Choir and Orchestra will combine talents for UTSA's fourth annual Holiday Concert. The program will include Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 5 "Sinfonia Sacra" conducted by Eugene Dowdy, Haydn's "Kyrie" and "Magnificat" conducted by Gary Mabry and concluding with Mozart's "Coronation Mass," which will be conducted by John Silantien. The performance is free and open to the public.

This year’s Madrigal Dinner performance will tell the tale of love and politics between France's Louis XIII, his wife Queen Anne and the king’s chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu. Despite the need for an heir apparent, the king and queen's relationship is anything but harmonious. Aware of the plot of the Spanish and Austrian Hapsburgs to take over the throne, Cardinal Richelieu takes on the couple's waning relationship as a project to ensure the throne will stay with French royalty.

The performance will include a seated dinner. Seating is limited and available in tables of six. Tickets must be purchased in advance for regular seating at $40 or preferred seating at $50 by calling the UTSA Department of Music at (210) 458-4355.
