Hillel at UTSA plans Hanukkah celebration and "teach-in"

(Nov. 26, 2001)--Hillel, a UTSA student organization. will have a "Hanukkah Celebration and Teach-In” from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 in the John Peace Library Building Regents Room (4.03.12) on the 1604 Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The organization invites San Antonians to join them for an evening of fun and learning surrounding the traditions and symbolism of Hanukkah. The Austin Klezmer Quartet will perform, and Elise Barenblat will lead guests in Israeli dancing. Russian chef Lillian Kapelyan will demonstrate the art of preparing traditional potato latkes and sufganiyot, or Israeli donuts.

There will be a dreidel (top-spinning) competition between faculty and students/alumni. Hanukkah gelt (gold-wrapped chocolate coins) and doorprizes will also be distributed.

In addition to enjoying the traditional foods and music of Hanukkah, guests will also hear about the meaning behind the traditions and symbols, including the lighting of the menorah and the significance of its lights in the context of today's turbulent world.

Alumni Association seeks employee-graduates to help at Commencement

(Nov. 30, 2001)--The UTSA Alumni Association is looking for volunteers to assist with all three Commencement ceremonies and receptions on December 15. For each ceremony, Alumni volunteers are present in the PE Building to assist graduates with regalia, and to congratulate, encourage and recruit.

After each ceremony, the Alumni Association hosts a reception for graduates and their guests in the University Center. Volunteers greet the graduates, congratulate them on their achievement and encourage them to be a part of the Association.

Spaces remain for grant-writing workshop Dec. 7-8

(Nov. 30, 2001)--UTSA biology faculty member Luis Haro will conduct a two-day FASEB-MARC grant-writing workshop on the 1604 Campus in the University Center Retama Auditorium on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8.

On Friday, registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the workshop will run 9 a.m.-5 p.m. On Saturday the workshop will be conducted from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Refreshments will be provided by the College of Sciences each morning and on Friday afternoon. Participants will need to provide their own lunches. The campus food courts will not be open. About two dozen openings remain for workshop, which is free to participants.

Mexican Cultural Institute to host auction and Christmas bazaar

(Nov. 29, 2001)-- The Mexican Cultural Instutute (Instituto Cultural Mexicano) will host "Business and Art at the Instituto," a benefit auction and Christmas bazaar, featuring artwork by San Antonio community leaders and business people also known as accomplished artists, as well as artwork by other local and Mexican artists.

An auction and bazaar will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7. An additional bazaar will be conducted from noon-5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. The events will be at the Mexican Cultural Institute Casa Mexicana, 235 HemisFair Plaza. Free parking will be available at the Alamo St. parking lot. Reception to honor new SATAI leader

(Nov. 30, 2001)--Members of the Tri-Campus community are invited to a reception honoring new San Antonio Technology Accelerator Initiative (SATAI) Network president and CEO Tony Fisher from 5:30-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at the International Center (formerly the main San Antonio library, located at 203 S. St. Mary's).

Over the course of his 20-year career, the native New Yorker has worked with both large and small corporations. Fisher has assisted small ventures, entrepreneurs and non-profit groups in acquiring capital, and has conducted seminars on how ventures can access capital and grow their business. He has concentrated his efforts on non-traditional and other forms of alternative fund-raising.

Since joining SATAI Nov. 12, he has been engaged in developing a mentorship program as a support structure for entrepreneurs, creating a regional underwriting fund and expanding SATAI's efforts to support Homeland Defense initiatives.
Fisher earned an undergraduate degree at Xavier University of Louisiana, a master's in public administration at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and a law degree at State University of New York-Buffalo.
