UTSA and Adopt-A-Hallway program work to motivate students

(Nov. 5, 2001)--A ribbon cutting at Charles Graebner Elementary School by Jesse Zapata, UTSA Downtown vice provost and former Graebner student, marked UTSA's continuing participation in the Adopt-A-Hallway program, which began in San Antonio last year.

Adopt-A-Hallway is sponsored by the Ford Foundation Academic and Community Collaborative Ensuring Student Success (ACCESS) School-to-College work group. Under the program, representatives from UTSA and the Alamo Community College District (ACCD) visit local schools to distribute information about the colleges. Students will also be invited to UTSA and ACCD campuses for tours during the year.

The idea is to enable students to make an early connection with the higher education opportunities available to them. The goals of the program are to provide a seamless transition for students and their families from preschool through college, increase high school completion, and increase college entrance and graduation rates.

Burbank High School plus its two middle and six elementary feeder schools are the focus of ACCESS members' work, which includes motivating students to remain in school and work towards a college degree.

In addition to UTSA and ACCD, other ACCESS members are Intercultural Development Research Association, San Antonio Independent School District, Communities Organized for Public Service, and Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund.
