Builders association establishes endowed business scholarship

(Nov. 14, 2001)--The Greater San Antonio Builders Association (GSABA) established the Jesse Baker Endowed Construction Management scholarship by presenting a gift of $22,000 last night to Bruce Bublitz, dean of the College of Business.

The endowment is in honor of Jesse Baker and his contributions to the home building industry and the UTSA construction management degree program. Baker was the first chairman of the College of Business Advisory Council and instrumental in launching the construction management degree program.

A Texas home builder and developer since the 1950s, Baker developed numerous subdivisions and several thousand single-family homes and apartments. He is past president of the San Antonio Builders Association, the Corpus Christi Builders Association and the Texas Association of Builders.

Baker was the first recipient of the GSABA Builder of the Year award and also received the Texas Builder of the Year award. In May 1987 he was inducted into the National Housing Hall of Fame, the highest honor attained by an individual in the housing industry.

The scholarship will be awarded to full-time undergraduate and graduate students actively pursuing a degree in the construction management program in UTSA’s College of Business.
