Mayor encourages UTSA support, tech leaders meet new deans
(Nov. 9, 2001)--Mayor Ed Garza encouraged a capacity crowd of technology leaders to continue their support of UTSA, as it strives to become a top-tier research university. He spoke at a Friday luncheon sponsored by UTSA and the San Antonio Technology Accelerator Initiative (SATAI).
The new mayor described his recent trip to Washington to meet with federal officials and outlined his efforts to help make San Antonio a leader in bioterrorism research and information security. Garza's goals go hand in hand with UTSA's biotechnology initiative, centered on an $80 million science and engineering building for biomedical and biotechnology research.
The mayor complimented UTSA President Ricardo Romo on his dedication and diligence in promoting his vision for the university to the community, as well as to state and national leaders.
The luncheon also provided the opportunity for local business leaders to meet the newest UTSA deans, William Scouten, College of Sciences, and Zorica Pantic-Tanner, College of Engineering.
Scouten discussed current and planned doctoral programs. He emphasized the importance of UTSA's top national rankings for the last five years for the number of undergraduate degrees in biological sciences awarded to Hispanics. Most students earning the degrees resided in San Antonio and many were the first in their families to obtain college degrees.
Pantic-Tanner touted the College of Engineering's recent high marks from a national accreditation committee, which commended the college on improvements since the last accreditation process. She added that she came to UTSA to help make the College of Engineering one of the top programs in the nation.
UTSA civil, mechanical and engineering undergraduate programs are ranked among the top 50 U.S. News Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs.
Bill Morrow, UTSA alumnus and CEO of Grande Communications was the lead sponsor for the event. Other sponsors included David Spencer, CEO of OnBoard Software Inc.; Elaine Mendoza, president of Conceptual Mindworks Inc.; and Joe Fulton, director of environmental research and policy assessment for City Public Service.
