Immigration roundtable tonight to feature national scholars, advocates
(Nov. 29, 2001)--A roundtable discussion on contemporary immigration issues will be conducted from 7-9 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Nov. 29 at the UTSA Downtown Campus in the Frio Street Building Room 1.406. The moderator will be Annanya Bhatacharjee, immigrant, women's rights activist and writer from New York City.
Panelists will include: Maria Jimenez, director of the Immigration Law Enforcement Monitoring Project; Grace Chang, author of Disposable Domestics: Immigrant Women Workers in the Global Economy; Raquel Marquez, UTSA assistant professor of sociology; and Jerome Ceille, secretary-treasurer of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee.
The heightened focus on U.S. immigration policy in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is drawing increased attention to debates related to amnesty, guest worker programs and quotas. Roundtable panelists will provide a historical perspective on 1965 as a watershed moment in U.S. immigration policy, exploring how public policy debates impact national, international and human well being.
The roundtable discussion is co-sponsored by the UTSA Hispanic Research Center, College of Public Policy, College of Liberal and Fine Arts, Division of Bilingual-Bicultural Studies, Department of Sociology, Department of Political Science and the Department of English, Classics and Philosophy.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information call (210) 458-2650.
