Artists use common items to create sculptures with statements

(Nov. 9, 2001)--The UTSA Department of Art will host an exhibit of sculptures, "Figurative Differences," from Nov. 11-Dec. 14 at the Art Gallery on the 1604 Campus. There will be a reception at the gallery from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, that is free and open to the public.

The exhibition features the work of Texas artists Phillip Evett (Blanco), Tre Arenz (Austin), James Tisdale (Lockhart), Harry Geffert (Crowley), Melody Ellis (Huntsville) and Mark Schatz (Austin). Ron Boling, art gallery director, and Steve Reynolds, professor of ceramics, organized the exhibit.

In the 20th century, it became common for artists to incorporate everyday, valueless items in their works to create unique statements. This culminated in a more commercial approach to art. The artists featured in the exhibit are among the first generation of Americans to have spent their entire lives completely saturated with commercial production, and are accustomed to the idea of commercial forms being a valuable part of the contemporary art scene. Noted artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, Claus Oldenberg, Liza Lou, Katharina Fritsch and Damien Hirst have turned the mundane into commercial forms of art.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Mon-Fri.; and 2-4 p.m., Sunday. For more information, call Ron Boling at (210) 458-4402.
