Tighter security measures implemented at all campuses
(Nov. 15, 2001)--University police has implemented some new policies at all campuses regarding afterhours building access, building lock-up times and use of service drives. While the changes are in response to a call for heightened security measures across the nation, University Police Chief George Powers emphasized that there are no known threats to the TriCampuses.
"It is prudent to make these changes to help ensure the safety of the Tri-Campus community, and we feel they will strengthen our security with minimal inconveniences to users," said Powers.
The new policies, now in effect, are:
--At the 1604 Campus, external building doors will be locked following the
last classes of the day, at approximately 10 p.m. The doors will remain locked
until around 6 a.m. This does not include the computer labs or the John Peace
Lbrary.
--At the Downtown Campus, all external doors will be locked at midnight after
the library and computer lab have closed and will re-open prior to morning
classes.
--At both the 1604 and Downtown campuses, authorized persons can request afterhours
entry by proceeding to the late hour entry doors or by calling the university
police dispatcher at 458-4242.
--Additionally, access to the service drives under the buildings at the 1604
and Downtown campuses are now restricted to service vehicles or those persons
on an authorized list. The 30-minute loading/unloading time limit will also
be strictly enforced.
--The Institute of Texan Cultures has begun a sign-in/sign-out procedure for
afterhours access.
