Oscar Van Auken
Interim associate dean named in College of Sciences
(Nov. 29, 2001)--Oscar Van Auken, professor of plant ecology in the College of Sciences, has been named interim associate dean for graduate studies and research for the college. Van Auken, a UTSA faculty member since 1975, has a master's degree in zoology and a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of Utah.

sciences programs at UTSA in order to better serve the entire San Antonio
and south Texas communities."
Van Auken served in the NIH Minority Biomedical Support Program which trains
minority students in biological research. His professional service includes
evaluating proposals for the USDA, NSF and DOE. He has reviewed manuscripts
for the journals Ecology, Oecologia , The Journal of Ecology and American
Journal of Botany, among others.
He was chair, biology section, of the Texas Academy of Science and is a board
member of the Southwestern Association of Naturalists and the San Antonio
Botanical Center.
Van Auken received grants and contracts from a variety of organizations including
Texas Parks and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy,
National Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health. He has more
than 80 publications and has been a frequent guest lecturer.
