Student organization sponsors National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week

(Oct. 19, 2001)--FACES (Finding Awareness by Creating Educated Students), a UTSA student organization, will sponsor National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week activities, Oct. 23-25. The organization will offer "mocktails" and "drunk goggle" demonstrations at the 1604 and Downtown Campuses. "Mocktails" are tasty, nonalcoholic beverages. "Drunk goggles" distort your perception and agility as alcohol does. The schedule of events is listed below.

Campus community members are invited to sign a Contract for Life from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24. outside the University Center bookstore on the 1604 Campus. The contract is a promise not to drive while under the influence of alcohol or other illicit drugs, or to allow others to drive while under the influence. Members of all UTSA student organizations, fraternities, sororities and Chisholm Hall and University Oaks residents are encouraged to participate. The group with the most participation will win a trophy and an ice cream party.

FACES is part of a nationwide peer education network designed to educate students about how to make better choices in their lives. Another goal of the organization is to facilitate a sense of community and to encourage students to participate in campus life.

Organized by the UTSA Counseling Center in 1996, FACES promotes university resources that can help students get through difficult times, conducts educational presentations, performs educational skits, distributes educational brochures and conducts discussion sessions. Topics included in their educational efforts include alcohol and drug abuse, safer sex, HIV/AIDS, multicultural issues and date rape.

Sponsors of the week's events are FACES, Judicial Affairs, UTSAPD, University Housing, Wellness and Recreation, Student Leadership and Activities, and University Health and Counseling Services.

The entire UTSA community is invited to help UTSA students make healthier choices regarding the use of alcohol. For more information contact Heather Ambrose at 458-4140.
