New abstract paintings displayed at UTSA Art Gallery

(Oct. 12, 2001)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Art will host an exhibit of abstract paintings entitled "Not Your Father's South Texas: New Abstract Painting in San Antonio" from Oct. 12-Nov. 9 at the UTSA Art Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public.

Originally presented at the Purple Orchid Gallery in Dallas, the exhibition features the work of UTSA alumni Estevan Arredondo, Todd Brandt, Nate Cassie, Margaret Craig, Augusto Di Stefano, Trish Lewandowsky, Kim Squaglia and Thomas Walsh.

Frances Colpitt, associate professor of art history and criticism, and Jennifer Davy, graduate student in contemporary art history, organized the exhibit.

Although installation and conceptually based work continue to be the major forms of contemporary artistic expression in San Antonio, as elsewhere, many young artists have turned to abstraction as an alternative to issue-laden narrative styles. The exhibition also includes work from established abstract painters Robert Tiemann and Mark Schlesinger who share this sensibility.

Avoiding the anxiety of self-expression associated with modernist abstraction, the paintings in this exhibition tend to be characterized by bright, often artificial color, relief or screen-like surfaces, compositions based on the grid and an embrace of a painting's decorative potential.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m -4 p.m., Monday.–Friday and 2-4 p.m., Sunday. For more information, call Frances Colpitt at (210) 458-4386.
