Romo honored with ACLU Maury Maverick Sr. Award

(Oct. 10, 2001)--UTSA President Ricardo Romo was honored Oct. 9 by the San Antonio Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union with the prestigious Maury Maverick Sr. Award during its annual dinner at the Omni Hotel.

Romo was honored for his work in both education and civil rights. A life-long educator, Romo has been president of UTSA for two years. He also has been active in voting rights cases in Texas and California, where he taught in secondary and college classrooms during his early career.

Maury Maverick Sr. was a lawyer, businessman, politician and civil rights leader until his death in 1954. A former mayor of San Antonio and U.S. congressman, he actively supported issues related to civil liberties, including expanded public housing and community health initiatives.

Other honorees at the dinner included State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, who received the ACLU’s Legislative Excellence Award, and San Antonio attorney Pat Maloney, who was honored for life-time service to ACLU.

William C. Powers Jr., dean of the University of Texas School of Law, delivered the keynote address at the ACLU dinner. An expert in tort law, Powers is well known for his writings on product liability.
