British acting troupe to perform Shakespeare play at UTSA

(Oct. 12, 2001)--Actors from the London Stage, a troupe of five British actors, comes to UTSA for a week of teaching and performances the week of Oct. 14. The touring ensemble will perform Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 and 20 in the Arts Building Recital Hall on the 1604 Campus and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Buena Vista Street Building Theater on the Downtown Campus. The residency marks the 13th anniversary of UTSA’s annual Shakespeare program.

The actors from Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company and Royal National Theatre will play multiple roles in the production that will utilize an uncut script, simple costumes and minimal scenery with an emphasis on language.

Written circa 1595, the play contains some of Shakespeare’s most lyrical verse with themes of romantic love and the opposites of the real and supernatural worlds. The acting company visits selected American university campuses each year to perform and conduct workshops.

Tickets are $15, $7 for students, and are available at the UTSA University Center Ticket Office (1604 Campus), the College of Liberal and Fine Arts office, Buena Vista Street Building Room 4.384 (Downtown Campus) and at the door. For more information call (210) 458-4404.
