UTSA will host Oct. 31 United Way agency information fair
(October 26, 2001)--Representatives from seven agencies supported by the United Way charity organization will participate in an information fair from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31 at the Sombrilla on the 1604 Campus.
UTSA faculty and staff will have the opportunity to talk to representatives about how United Way funds are used by their respective agencies. Information tables will be available to assist prospective contributors in signing up for United Way contributing. Prevent Blindness of Texas will provide free eyesight screening at the fair.
Agencies expected to participate are CHIP, Any Baby Can of San Antonio, American Heart Association, Brighton School, Inc., Community Health Agencies, Alzheimer's Association, Prevent Blindness of Texas and National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
The fair is the second event this month designed to help spread the United Way story. Last Friday, Ed Baxter of Boysville in Boerne spoke to UTSA employees about how United Way supports his organization. He said that six Boysville clients now attend UTSA with the help of scholarship money.
"Eighty-seven percent of the students at Boysville graduate from high school, and 93 percent of the students on scholarship from Boysville graduate college within five years," said Baxter. He said that young people are placed in Boysville usually due to abuse and neglect by their families.
Last year UTSA received two state awards for its high level of United Way participation. UTSA recorded the largest per capita giving in the state and had the largest increase in numbers of donations among all components of the UT System. The percent of UTSA enployees participating in United Way increased from 36 to 46 percent during last year's campaign.
Additionally, United Way officals say that 126 UTSA employees were directly assisted by one of the 98 agencies supported by United Way.
All UTSA employees have been given a United Way pledge card and are encouraged
to return their pledges by Nov. 9.
