Blue Crew membership offers fun and rewards to UTSA students
(Oct. 2, 2001)--More than 1,000 students have pledged to make the UTSA Convocation Center and other Roadrunner stadiums "the most intimidating places in college athletics." In return, the UTSA Athletic Department has promised students fun, excitement and rewards.
Blue Crew members receive preferred seating in a special section at athletic events in the Convocation Center, preferred parking for all games, an official Blue Crew shirt, a membership card, a rally towel, and a 5 percent discount on all athletic department merchandise. Members with e-mail addresses receive reminders of upcoming home athletic events and regular updates on other activities.
Free membership in the Blue Crew ends Oct. 15. To join after the deadline, students will have to pay $10. Membership cards and T-shirts are available at the games. More than 50 students joined the Blue Crew at last weekends women's volleyball games.
"The more games that you attend, the more you are rewarded," said UTSA Athletic Director Lynn Hickey. "After attending just 10 athletic events, students will begin receiving discounts for athletic merchandise. We're also working with local restaurants to honor Blue Crew membership cards on food and other purchases."
Following most home games, Blue Crew gatherings will be held at local restaurants. What-a-Burger, Wings N More, EZs, Hooters, Bennigans and University Bowl have committed to special offers following home volleyball matches. For example, EZs will offer a $2 discount on purchases by Blue Crew members following the Sept. 28 match.
Blue Crew members are in for a unique doubleheader Tuesday night. The UTSA volleyball team takes on Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center on the 1604 Campus. After the game, Blue Crew members are invited to the University Bowl, 12332 IH-10 West, for free popcorn and two-for-one bowling. Show your membership card and receive two games of bowling for the price of one.
Volleyball posted wins over Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State last week, with more than 250 Blue Crew members attending Fridays Rowdy Rally and game with Southeastern Louisiana.
Blue Crew members are invited to hear San Antonio Police Chief Al Philippus speak to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting at 8 p.m., Wednesday in the Convocation Center. All students are invited and can sign up for Blue Crew membership following the meeting.
