UTSA debaters place second out of 17 universities and colleges

(Oct. 24, 2001)- Ten UTSA debaters began the trip back to national prominence at a tournament hosted by Wichita State University late last month. Overall, the team placed second out of seventeen universities and colleges. Baylor University garnered the first place award. The UTSA debate team has a history of national rankings of third and fourth place.

UTSA debaters won numerous other awards. Two first time debaters, Clair Smith, San Antonio sophomore, and Steve Clemens, St. Louis junior, placed third, losing a split decision to Regis University of Denver. Smith was awarded the fourth Speaker Award and Clemens placed third out of twenty-four debaters in the division.

In the junior division, Terrell Baptiste, Houston freshman, and Gene Valdez, San Antonio senior, placed fourth. Baptiste won fifth among thirty-six debaters. San Antonio sophomore Michael Thornton and Chicago junior Marty Golando placed first in the junior division. Thornton won the eleventh Speaker Award and Golando placed third.

UTSA debaters defeated teams from Northern Iowa, Baylor, Southwest Missouri State, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Emporia State (KS), University of Wyoming, Wichita State (KS), Wisconsin-Oshkosh, William Jewell College (MO) and Regis University.

Other students representing UTSA in the Wichita State Tournament were, in alphabetical order, Aaron Haggerty, Kate Richey, Jeremy Stevens, Oliver Taylor and Gene Valdez.

Upcoming debate competitions are at Johnson County Community College (Kansas City), Pepperdine University (Malibu, CA), University of Central Oklahoma (Edmond) and Wake Forest (North Carolina)
