UTSA Leadership Award goes to Gwen Kellogg

(October 18, 2001)--Gwen Kellogg, UTSA administrative services officer in the College of Engineering, will be honored with the Leadership Award, one of five awards that will be presented next week at the UTSA Staff Excellence Awards ceremony. The presentation will be made at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in the University Center Laurel Room on the 1604 Campus.

The ceremony will include other staff recognition, 5-30 year service pin recipients, festive food and door prizes (T-shirts and tickets to SeaWorld). All UTSA staff are invited to attend the event. At the ceremony, President Ricardo Romo will present to each of the five Staff Excellence winners an award of $1,000 and a commemorative plaque.

"The caliber of the 88 nominees was tremendous and these individuals are truly deserving of this exciting honor," said Tomas Larralde, selection committee member and assistant to the president.

A demonstrated ability to lead and a commitment to furthering the university's goals at all levels are the hallmarks of the Leadership Award recipient.

The 2001 UTSA Staff Excellence Awards recognize staff members for their service and outstanding accomplishments. The winners were chosen from 88 nominations submitted by UTSA faculty, staff and students.

The following profile is second in a series of five spotlighting the winners of the UTSA Staff Excellence Awards.

Profile:

GWEN KELLOGG

Seven has proved a lucky number for the College of Engineering. Seven is the number of years of UTSA experience that Gwen Kellogg brought with her in August 2000 when she transferred to the newly formed college as an administrative services officer.

The five years she spent in the College of Business dean's office and the former management/marketing division's tourism management office had prepared her for her duties as a special assistant to the president, and then to the vice president for administration. In those positions, she worked on the SACS substantive change accreditation of the Downtown Campus and then on UTSA's SACS reaccreditation process. She also worked as an administrative assistant in the office of the associate vice president for enrollment services for a year.

Everything that she had learned has served her and the university well since Provost Guy Bailey asked her to take on the challenge of helping to organize the new College of Engineering, a task she undertook with Interim Dean Dwight Henderson, administrative assistant Maria Espericueta and three original division staff members.

In the year since, Interim Dean Henderson has gone, new Dean Zorica Pantic-Tanner has begun her duties and the one-time engineering division has restructured into three departments.

During the same period, planning has moved ahead for a visit from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology as the college prepares for re-accreditation.

Faculty and staff give much of the credit for maintaining the college's momentum--and their sanity!--to Kellogg. She was nominated twice for this award, and the nominations were accompanied by two dozen letters of support, including submissions from Dean Pantic-Tanner, former Interim Dean Henderson, every department chair in the college and every original administrative staff member.
