Former regent and wife honored at UTSA ceremony
(October 26, 2001)--UTSA President Ricardo Romo paid tribute to former UT System Board of Regents Chairman Tom Loeffler and Nancy Loeffler, his wife, for their service to UTSA and higher education Friday during ceremonies naming a seminar room in the university's Biosciences Building in their honor.
"Tom and Nancy Loeffler are two individuals who, early on, were instrumental in the success of UTSA's original Biosciences Initiative, which helped build this facility, this building and numerous new programs at UTSA," Romo said.
"I consider Tom to be a close, personal friend," continued Romo. "He has devoted countless hours to expanding access to quality higher education and health care to all Texans, particularly those in San Antonio and South Texas. Today, the University of Texas System is a better institution because of Tom."
Romo described Nancy Loeffler as a "tireless advocate" for volunteerism, who has served as a member and in leadership positions in a long list of organizations, including American Heart Association, Junior League, West Texas Lighthouse for the Blind, Leukemia Society, March of Dimes, Santa Rosa Hospital, the board of KLRN public television, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Vice President's Residence Foundation in Washington, D.C.
A fourth-generation Texan born in Fredericksburg, Tom Loeffler served on the UT Board of Regents for 12 years. A partner in the national law firm of Loeffler, Jonas and Tuggey, he is a graduate of both UT Austin and the UT School of Law. The Loefflers are the parents of three children.
UT Regent and chair of the UT System Academic Affairs Committee, Cyndi Taylor Krier, Bexar County Judge and chair of UTSA's Biotechnology Initiative Nelson Wolff; UT Board of Regents Executive Secretary Emeritus Art Dilley; UTSA College of Sciences Dean William Scouten and College of Engineering Dean Zorica Pantic-Tanner; and several state and local officials joined Romo and longtime friends of the Loefflers, Red McCombs and others, for the festivities.
