Engineering student organization seeks new members for upcoming competition

(Oct. 5, 2001)--UTSA's student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is on the recruiting trail trying to find engineering students who want hands-on experience in addition to classroom education. The organization has about 50 members, but more help is needed to pitch in with upcoming events.

One of the main projects for the group, is the annual steel bridge design competition that will be held in Mexico City next January. The goal of the competition is to design and build a steel bridge and put it together in a timed contest against other universities. The completed bridge must support a weight of 2,500 pounds.

The UTSA organization has competed at the regional level for the last three years, and captured first place in 1998 when the competition was hosted here. The organization is now gearing up for the regional concrete canoe competition in March.

Students must design and construct a canoe and then compete against other area universities. The teams are judged not only on race-day performance, but also on oral presentations and how the canoe is displayed.

Last year, UTSA finished first at regionals held at Boerne Lake. The team went on to compete at nationals in San Diego. It was the fifth year in a row the team advanced to national competition after a first-place finish at the regional level.
