Nation stunned by apparent terrorist attacks

(11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001)--As members of the Tri-Campus community prepared for work this morning, the first in a continuing chain of apparent terrorist acts against the United States was carried out in New York City, with the crashing of a hijacked commercial airliner into the World Trade Center. It is confirmed that one UTSA staff member has seven relatives who worked in the World Trade Center. Fortunately, all seven have survived.

At this time, all university operations remain on schedule. President Ricardo Romo said, "Gov. Perry has requested that all state offices remain open. We encourage people to remain calm in this national crisis," Romo said.

Romo added that it is important to be compassionate to all members of the Tri-Campus community.

For those who have immediate family in the areas impacted, you may call the American Red Cross for information at (210) 224-5151. Or call 1-800-775-6803. Request a family well being inquiry. This procedure is for information on immediate family members only.

For those who would like to watch news on the event, televisions are available at the 1604 Campus in the University Center Central Park dining area and The Roost game room. Radio news is available in the Ski Lodge. Additional sets are now being placed at common areas throughout the campus. At the Downtown Campus, a television has been set up in the Frio Street Building Commons area.

Televisions and seating are available at the following locations:

University Center, 1604 Campus:
East Wing (UC Expansion)
West Wing (Old UC)
Laurel Room

Downtown Campus:
Student Center, Durango Building

Student counseling services has professional staff standing by at the 1604 and Downtown Campuses to assist those who may want to talk. At 1604, the counseling office is located in University Center Room 2.01.04. Downtown, the office is located on the first floor of the Buena Vista Street Building behind the bookstore.

From 1-5 p.m., all members of the 1604 Campus who wish to gather to talk about today's events are invited to meet in the University Center Retama Auditorium. Those at the Downtown Campus should gather in the Frio Street Building Commons area.

Kathleen Glash, director of the counseling center, said faculty may want to consider allowing their classes to take part in these group gatherings.
