students at SombrillaUTSA's record enrollment nears 20,000 students

(Sept. 18, 2001)--Preliminary census-day tallies at the University of Texas at San Antonio show 19,841 students taking courses at the 1604 and Downtown campuses--a gain of 1,011 students or 5.4 percent over last fall. The total includes 17,392 undergraduates and 2,449 graduate students.

"This significant increase in the number of students at UTSA can be attributed to a number of initiatives at the university," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. "We have enhanced recruitment efforts, developed additional degree programs and developed a package of innovative scholarship programs designed to attract new students."

Total enrollment for the UTSA Downtown Campus increased by nearly 13 percent (400 students) to reach 3,587. About two-thirds of these students also take some classes at 1604. A third academic building and an underground parking garage opened for the fall semester at the Downtown Campus.

Gains of greater than six percent each were seen in the numbers of Hispanic (6.4%) and African American (8.9%) students. The number of minority students rose overall by 718, or 7.1 percent, to 10,894 students. Minority students now comprise 55 percent (up 1 percent from 2000) of the total student body at UTSA.

The number of graduate students increased 4.5 percent to 2,449 students, and the total number of semester hours for graduate students again increased (more than 8 percent)--an indication more graduate students either are attending full time or are working to complete their degrees more quickly.

Each of the six colleges at UTSA reported increased enrollments, with the College of Engineering reporting an increase of nearly 13 percent.

"UTSA's increasing enrollment in engineering and the sciences is a vital component of our region's effort to be a leader in the biotechnology industry," Romo said. "UTSA is committed to educating tomorrow's regional leaders, whether they be scientists, CEOs, artists or teachers."
