Business ethics symposium on Tuesday will feature SBC chairman
(Sept. 24, 2001)--Edward E. Whitacre Jr., chairman of the board and chief
executive officer of SBC Communications Inc., will present the keynote address
at the UTSA Business Ethics Symposium Tuesday, Sept. 25. The event is free
and open to the public.
Hosted by UTSA's College of Business, the topic for this year's symposium
is "Business Ethics in the Global Marketplace." The daylong program
will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 3:15 p.m. with a reception. All lectures
will be held in the Business Auditorium in the Business Building on the 1604
Campus.
Bryan Husted, professor of management at the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios
Superiores de Monterrey, will discuss "Ethics and Culture in International
Business" at 9:30 a.m. Husted's research focuses on cross-cultural business
ethics and corporate social and environmental performance.
At 11 a.m. Edward E. Whitacre Jr. will present "Ethical Challenges in
International Business." Whitacre has led SBC in an era of unprecedented
growth and will discuss how good corporate citizenship is an integral part
of their overall business strategy.
The symposium will conclude with a lecture by David Schilling, director of
the Global Accountability Program for the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility
at 2 p.m. Schilling, a United Methodist minister, focuses on labor rights
and human rights issues related to the Maquiladora sector in Mexico and Central
America.
The symposium was established in 1989 as a joint venture between the College
of Business and the UTSA Methodist Student Movement. The event allows students,
faculty, business and community leaders to engage in an ongoing dialogue about
the practice of business ethics and the role of moral wisdom for corporate
social responsibility. The event is sponsored by United Commercial Realty
