Unconventional author and political observer will speak Monday at UTSA
(Sept. 21, 2001)--Noted author and political observer Sam Quinones will speak at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 24, in the University of Texas at San Antonio Business Building University Room on the 1604 Campus. The presentation, "Telethons, Talk Shows and Dead Presidents: The Unnoticed Moments of Mexico's Transition to Democracy," is sponsored by the College of Liberal and Fine Arts.
A California native, Quinones earned economics and American history degrees at UC Berkeley, and covered the city, crime and government beats for several West coast newspapers. Living in Mexico since 1994, his stories have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun, Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner and Ms. Magazine, among others. A guest on National Public Radio's Fresh Air and Latino USA, Quinones was also a 1998 recipient of the prestigious Alicia Patterson Fellowship.
Author of the book, "True Tales from Another Mexico: The Lynch Mob, the Popsicle Kings, Chalino, and the Bronx," Quinones merges observation with interviews and storytelling in a search for the central truths about a modern Mexico. The stories come from ignored margins of society and people who use wits and imagination to strike out on their own in southern California and deep inside Mexico.
The speech is free and open to the public. For more information go to the author's Web site or call James McDonald at (210) 458-4673.
