Adult Education Classes Offered at Institute of Texan Cultures

(Aug. 24, 2001)--The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) will offer a semester of adult education classes through the Academy of Learning in Retirement (ALIR). ALIR functions cooperatively with ITC and provides educational classes for women and men of retirement age.

Course registration for the fall semester will be held Sept. 4-6, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in the ITC Multipurpose Room with classes beginning Sept. 10 and ending Dec. 13. ALIR offers a variety of classes ranging in topic from art to computers. People with all levels of education are invited to take classes, with an interest in learning as the only prerequisite.

By registering for classes, students become members of the ALIR program. Membership is limited to people age 50 or older, or spouses of members. The membership fee of $90 for the fall covers registration for as many classes as a member wants to take. Additional expenses for textbooks, materials, supplies, trips and social activities must be paid by enrollees.

ALIR is developed by its membership, which includes men and women who have held positions involving varied responsibilities and talents. The classes are created and taught by members who volunteer as instructors, planners and committee members.

The ITC, one of the Tri-Campuses of the University of Texas at San Antonio, is an educational center focusing on educating the public about the history and diverse cultures of Texas. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., it is located at Bowie and Durango streets at HemisFair Park in downtown San Antonio.

For more information about ALIR classes call (210) 458-2294 or visit the Institute of Texan Cultures Web site.
